I recently took a flight to Arizona to visit my family, and the flight attendant of course did the spiel about the where the exits are and so on. But what really got me thinking, was how they always say in case of an emergency, always put on your oxygen mask first. If you are helping a small child or an elderly person, you are to put on your mask first and then put on theirs.
I thought about how this should also be applied to our daily lives. So often we are running on empty trying to help others, instead of taking care of ourselves first. Just like if there was an emergency on the plane, you need to make sure you are still breathing before you worry about anyone else. Because let’s face it, if you pass out, you are not going to be much help to anyone.
I grew up with a brother with Down syndrome, and then I went into a profession where I constantly put others needs before mine. I finally realized as I got older, that I need to take care of myself first. I need to put my lifesaver on and then worry about helping others.
